About Voice OFF, Hands ON
Voice OFF, Hands ON! (VOHO) is a student club at Nevada State University. Our group brings people together to learn American Sign Language (ASL), build friendships, and connect with the Deaf community. We welcome people who are new to signing and people who already have ASL experience. You do not need to be fluent to join us.
At VOHO, learning happens through connection. Club meetings and activities give members time to practice signing with others, ask questions, and get to know new people. You might learn a new sign, join a conversation, or help someone else feel comfortable participating. Small moments like these can help people grow their confidence and feel part of the group.
We know that learning a language takes time. Members do not have to sign perfectly or know every answer. It is okay to pause, ask for clarification, and try again. We want everyone to feel comfortable practicing while treating other people with patience and respect. Each person joins with different experiences and skills, and each person has something to contribute.
VOHO is also a place to learn about Deaf culture. ASL is a language, and the Deaf community has its own history, experiences, and perspectives. We encourage members to listen to Deaf people and learn from them. Our goal is to create opportunities for connection while respecting the people and community at the center of ASL.

Friendship is an important part of VOHO
Coming to a meeting can be a chance to see familiar faces, make a new friend, or find someone to practice with. We want members to feel welcome when they arrive, included in activities, and supported as they learn. A friendly group can make it easier to try something new.
We also want to foster allyship. To us, allyship means listening, learning, and taking action to support communication access and inclusion. Members can support one another by being thoughtful about how they communicate, making room for different experiences, and asking what helps people participate. We can keep learning how to be better friends and allies together.
VOHO meetings and events give members ways to connect beyond the classroom. Activities may include ASL practice, signing games, group conversations, and time to socialize. Members can share ideas for future activities and help make the club a welcoming place for others. You are welcome to participate at your own pace while you get to know the group.
Deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing people are welcome at VOHO. Whether your reason for joining is to learn ASL, meet people, understand Deaf culture, or support your friends, we hope you will feel at home here.
