Traveling With McNair

As a TRIO McNair Scholar, travel funds may be expended to travel to a professional conference in your discipline, a TRIO McNair Program conference elsewhere in the country, or to conduct graduate school visits.

  • Visiting Graduate Schools

Our scholars are encouraged to look into programs outside of Nevada , and McNair can provide opportunities to tour out-of-state institutions. Throughout our first 5 years, our students have been able to tour campuses like:

    • UNR, University of Michigan, Baylor University, UCLA, USC, Cal Tech, Johns Hopkins University, Howard University.
  • Conference Travel

Presenting research is a significant component of our program, and we encourage our students to present at as many conferences as they can. When these conferences require travel, we are able to provide funds to cover the cost of the following:

    • Registration fees for conferences
    •  Transportation costs, including flights, trains, taxi or shuttle rides to and from the airport, or mileage if you plan to drive (as long as mileage is less expensive than a flight)
    •  Hotel accommodations
    •  Meals, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner (excluding alcoholic beverages and tips). Unless explicitly listed above, it must be assumed that TRIO McNair travel funds do not cover any other costs.

In order to be eligible to request these funds, the Scholar must provide evidence they have been accepted to present their TRIO McNair-funded research project at the conference. These funds are limited and are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

To apply for travel funds, Scholars should complete the Travel Request Form and submit to TRIO McNair Associate Director for review at least 4-6 weeks before the travel. All scholars are required to seek additional funds from their department and college.
